The company has followed it up this year with the SC-BT205, a full 5.1 system equipped with all the tasty features found on Panasonic’s latest standalone players, the DMP-BD60 and BD80. It’s one of three new Blu-ray systems in the current range – the others are the SC-BT200, which features bookshelf-style speakers, and the SC-BTX70, a style-led 2.1-channel system with a new vertical-standing main unit. The use of bamboo in the woofer and tweeter speaker cones allows Panasonic to ‘panda’ to the needs of audiophiles with a responsive, detailed sound that suits Blu-ray’s high-resolution audio formats. Meanwhile the passive Kelton subwoofer features two internal chambers, with the front chamber acting as a filter that reduces unwanted noise. Style conscious consumers can rest assured that the SC-BT100’s main unit is attractive, sporting an all-black finish with some tasteful green lights and flashes of silver.

Set-up is a piece of cake thanks to the colour-coded speaker terminals and the Smart Setup mode, which sets all the sound parameters automatically using a microphone and a series of test tones. You also get a top-drawer remote, which boasts perfectly-sized, clearly-labelled buttons. The SD card slot can be used to play AVCHD, SD video and JPEG files, or you can shove a flash drive into the USB port and enjoy DivX, MP3 and JPEG playback – but there’s no support for WMA, DivX HD or MKV.
The front-mounted flaps feel a little plasticky to the touch but the middle one conceals some exciting stuff, namely an iPod dock and card slot that supports regular SD and SDHC cards. The wall-mountable front/centre speakers and Kelton subwoofer look unremarkable but feel chunky and robustly built. This Home Cinema System allows you to watch 2D Blu-ray Discs in full high definition and can also playback incredible 3D Blu-rays. High sound quality further boosts the enjoyment of high definition movies.

But unless you're a wiring and surround-sound guru, figuring out the technical issues can get a little messy. With Peter Jackson’s ”The Frighteners” DVD in the tray, we were pleased by the quality of the unit’s upscaling, making this visually complex movie look terrific thanks to its accurate, focused detail and natural colour reproduction. As with most of its products, Panasonic packs the SC-BT100 with more features than you can shake a stick at, which on paper makes it look like good value for money despite its fairly steep price tag. As with other similar systems, they don't feel particularly robust or look too alluring – hey, the subwoofer has a chipboard ‘finish' on the rear – but thankfully they make up for it in terms of sound quality. Using the system is simple thanks to the straightforward onscreen menus, which use a similar design to the BD60 and BD80 players with a few tweaks. Everything is bright, colourful and pared down to the basics so that Blu-ray newbies can find their feet quickly.
High frequencies in ”The Dark Knight’s” Dolby TrueHD track are clean and crisp, and unlike many all-in-ones it manages to avoid making loud bangs and crashes during the car chase scene sound harsh or uncomfortable. Dialogue is competently handled too, giving Batman’s growly tones the requisite clarity. But almost as impressive is the depth and richness of the picture, which gives the movie’s gloomy visuals the cinematic gravitas they deserve, while the perfectly judged colour balance never lets skin tones look anything other than smooth and natural. The system also walks the Silicon Optix HQV tests – diagonal lines are smooth and free from jaggies, the pan across the stadium on the Film Resolution Loss test is composed and flicker-free, while noise reduction is second to none.

The SC-BT205 uses a set-top style control unit, which combines a Blu-ray/DVD/CD player with a 1,000W /470W multichannel digital amplifier, and it doesn’t strive for wafer-thin sexiness – it’s portly and proud. The unit is fitted with Panasonic’s customary mirrored fascia, a bit of glitzy eye-candy that makes up for the flimsy plastic flap below, which covers a set of inputs and a few buttons.
It’s a tad flabby at times, and could do with a bit more punch and speed for sudden thumps, but on the whole it does a decent job. The system decodes Dolby TrueHD, DTS HD Master Audio, Dolby Digital Plus and DTS HD, plus regular Dolby Digital and DTS. Like any system worth its salt, there’s a wide range of sound settings, including Dolby Pro Logic II Movie and Music, S. Surround or you can leave it up to the system to decide according to the type of material. There’s also a range of EQ settings , Centre Focus, which re-directs dialogue to make it appear to emanate from the TV, and Whisper-mode Surround for late-night listening.
As for sound, this is one of the best performances we’ve heard from a Panasonic one-box system. It’s able to muster the required grunt for raucous action scenes and shows impressive agility from the front and surround speakers, which results in a fast, exciting listen. You can play AVCHD, SD video and JPEG from SD cards, and disc support is sound – it spins every type of recordable DVD, CD and Blu-ray disc.
This causes an ‘Acoustic Filter’ effect, which absorbs unwanted noise while vibrating the 250mm passive radiators. But if you don’t have the space, cash or permission to add extra channels, then the 3.1 configuration makes a neat and compact way of experiencing the Blu-ray format. It’s also a dab hand on the sonic front, with the speakers’ bamboo cones blasting out Dolby True HD and DTS HD Master Audio tracks with rare relish. On the whole though, it’s a masterful performance by typical one-box standards.
Top it all with fine usability – it's a machine that has an auto-set-up with a calibration mic – with the result that you have the ideal all-in-one introduction to Blu-ray surround sound. Playing zombie slasher Dead Snow, the SC-BT205 sets itself apart from its rivals. The level of insight with both audio and video is a step above its rivals, the system producing a poised, balanced sound capable of punch and subtlety. Despite its modest appearance, that sub delivers chunky, fulsome bass – in fact, you’ll need to dial it down from the default settings to give the other speakers a chance to be heard such is its overbearing presence.
The display panel is a good size and the ring of green light surrounding the volume dial makes it unmissable in the dark. The system delivers virtual 7.1 channel sound dispersed through a wide listening area utilizing Panasonic’s advanced proprietary surround technology. Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD High Resolution and Master Audio virtual 7.1-channel surround sound decoding are among the standard features of the SC-BTX70.
